Our Tottenham Hotspur fans here in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that the international break doesn’t stop their recent run up the table.
Mauricio Pochettino has mastermind a fantastic rise up the table for Spurs this year, after what was a patchy time in the opening half of the season. Spurs currently sit second in the league and well within the Champions League spots for next year, which is vital with the new stadium move.
The Spurs fans in the bar will hope to see the team continue on the flipside of this international break and lock up a top-four finish as early as possible.
Indeed, a break will be good for some players as it will give them an opportunity for reflection. For some players, it will be a case of seeing where it has all gone wrong. Despite Tottenham’s recent fine form, it hasn’t been a particularly fruitful spell for a few first teamers.
With that said, these 2 Tottenham players seriously need to look at themselves during the international break…
Toby Alderwiereld
The Belgian defender has struggled to refind his spot in the team following his injury, and with that, his future at the club remains uncertain at present. Alderweireld is in his peak years and would be wise to get his head down and start to show Pochettino why he should be the number one centre-back once again.
Competition for places is always going to be high at a club like Spurs and Alderweireld is experiencing that for the first time, our regulars are intrigued to see how he’ll react.
Perhaps he needs to realise that Tottenham is the best place for him to continue to develop, and so perhaps reflecting on his decision to not yet sign a new deal will be a good use of his time.
Erik Lamela
Erik Lamela hasn’t shone as brightly as he has done in previous years, with this year him having to settle for a bit-part role within the first team.
However, if he uses the break right, he could start to gain more minutes on the pitch and start to show the Argentine boss what he can still bring to this Spurs team.
Spurs can use something different in the centre of the park and with Harry Kane looking likely to be out, Pochettino will need all the resources at hand.
