The 2016/17 Premier League campaign has proudly entertained the Football Transfer Tavern over the last ten months, unless you’re a Manchester United supporter.

With the appointment of Jose Mourinho alongside the high calibre arrivals of Zlatan Ibrahimović and Paul Pogba, fans were expecting a top four finish from the 20-time top-flight champions as a minimum, however, that aim is looking more distinct by the week.

Catching the likes of their rivals City and Liverpool would be an achievement in itself, which our Red Devils-mad barman isn’t happy about as his club used to reign English football for years.

The Europa League is the only silverware Manchester United can end the season with – alongside the EFL Cup – and accumulate any pride they have lost in the last twelve months.

So with that in mind, Mourinho should start to look ahead to next year and what prospects he could implement into the first-team just like Marcus Rashford did.

Axel Tuanzebe

The 19 year-old is seen as a future star at Old Trafford, but there’s no reason as to why he shouldn’t be given the opportunity to impress the Manchester United faithful in the latter stages of this season.

Axel Tuanzebe made his debut in the 4-0 FA Cup rout over Wigan Athletic in January, making an appearance off the bench, and has prominently been a figure-head in the club’s reserve team.

Chris Smalling hasn’t been able to impress the on-looking Jose Mourinho, nor has any of the senior centre-backs apart from last summer’s signing Eric Bailly; one of a few who come away from this campaign with any credibility.

Matthew Willock

The fans by the bar have been discussing one player who has always had an impact amongst the Manchester United team, both in the dressing room and on the pitch, as Michael Carrick nears the end of his playing career.

United should begin the hunt for a steady replacement and rather than jump into the market, Mourinho could look closer to home in the club’s academy.

Matthew Willock, who has two brothers plying their trade for Arsenal’s youth, is said to be stirring excitement behind the scenes but in order to impress the footballing world he needs a chance this side of the summer.
