Our Liverpool fans here in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that the two defensive signings Jurgen Klopp has made this winter window can aid their push for a Champions League spot.

Klopp has brought an attacking flavour to Anfield more so this season, and our Reds in the bar are loving it. With the introduction of Mo Salah to the front three, Liverpool have looked as dangerous as any team in Europe on their day.

However, many of the headlines have been surrounding Klopp’s indecision to cement a goalkeeping No.1 and the leaky defence that is prone to many a silly mistake. However, Klopp seems to have partly addressed the defensive issue by bringing in long-term target Virgil van Dijk from Southampton, along with relatively unknown young left-back Tony Gallacher from Falkirk.

Our punters seem to think that if Klopp can sort out the defence, the Reds will be a force to be reckoned with next season and our landlord takes a similar approach. Indeed, he wants to have a look at what the TWO signings in the winter window will bring to Anfield in their quest for Champions League football…

Virgil van Dijk

The former Celtic and Southampton man has been a long-term target for Klopp and he finally got his man on January 1st. If he’s the answer to the defensive conundrum is yet to be seen, but many of the regulars can’t deny that they have acquired a great defender.

If VVD can get the backline organised and in some sort of order, then Liverpool have a great chance of hitting the top four come May.

Tony Gallacher

The Falkirk defender is a young Scottish defender, in a similar mould to current left back choice Andy Robertson. Although he’s not direct competition for the spot just yet, Gallacher is waiting in the wings just in case and with that in the back of his mind.

Surely Robertson, as well as Alberto Moreno, will up their games to the levels required now, after some inconsistency from both throughout the course of the campaign.
