For the Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern, the signing of Virgil van Dijk has been a long time coming. Most expected him to move over the summer, but that didn’t happen, and the club suffered as a result. Defensively, they’ve really struggled this season, and so when his signing was confirmed on Wednesday evening, there was a unanimous cheer of delight in the pub.
He’s clearly going to make a big difference to the Liverpool first team, and they’ll be a far more solid team come the second-half of the season. However, it doesn’t seem as though the Liverpool faithful are entirely content quite yet.
Indeed, immediately following the news, Liverpool fans have seemingly moved on and have started considering their side’s next signing, with social media alive with speculation. It seems pretty clear that Liverpool fans online want another big name to move to the club, and one name that keeps coming up is that of Leon Goretzka.
Currently playing for Schalke, Goretzka’s contract expires at the end of the season, and it seems that whilst the van Dijk signing is a popular one, the prospect of signing Goretzka is exciting fans even more.
Liverpool were last linked with a move for him by the Liverpool Echo early in December, though it remains to be seen whether their interest is still maintained, given that there hasn’t been much noise since this report. That said, the Liverpool fans over on Twitter are desperate to see him join. Take a look at the speculation below, with fans clearly very excited…
Van Dijk Signed, Keita in the summer, Goretzka no1 priority, this team is almost complete.
All it needs is a new Goalkeeper, another DM and this team will be competing in all fronts next season. Never been this excited in ages. This is turning into a super team.— Samuel (@SamueILFC) December 27, 2017
