The Spurs fans in the Transfer Tavern tonight are excitedly discussing the season ahead and despite the lack of new faces, reckon they should dispose of Newcastle fairly easily.
Tottenham will be kicking off their Premier League season up north against Newcastle at St. James’ Park this Sunday and after coming second behind Chelsea last time out, they will want to go one better this season.
Being the away side on Tyneside is never easy, so Spurs will have their work cut out for them on the opening day.
There is no doubt that Mauricio Pochettino’s side will be pushing for the league title come the end of the season so a positive start and three points will be an absolute must for Spurs, anything other than that could derail any belief the players and the fans have.
At times, Tottenham’s midfield doesn’t get enough credit, with their attacking players stealing the show week in and week out it seems easy to forget those in the middle of the park.
On that note, here is the midfield duo that Pochettino must start for Spurs against Newcastle.
CM: Mousa Dembele
Mousa Dembele is a very underrated player within Tottenham’s ranks.
The Belgian centre midfielder makes it nearly impossible to get the ball away from him.
His strength, passing and shooting ability make him a key component to the Spurs side.
Putting Dembele in your side guarantees at least a seven out of ten performance every single game but more often than not, he offers much more than that.
CM: Eric Dier
Eric Dier looks set to stay at Tottenham following Jose Mourinho admitting defeat in his quest to bring the England international to Old Trafford.
Dier is a rock in front of the Spurs back line and is useful going forward too with his aerial ability utilised well from set pieces when he’s not taking them.
He’s the sort of player who can make something out of nothing and that could be the difference against Newcastle.
CM: Harry Winks
While Harry Winks’ injury last season saw his progress stall, few would doubt the 21-year-old’s ability.
It’s a big season for the England hopeful, who was largely used as an impact sub last term, though will be expected to produce the moments of quality he’s oh so capable of on a more regular basis this time around.
