Time is up for van Gaal flop as Mourinho looks to get Man United back to best – Agreed?

The Manchester United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are contemplating that it’s time for one of their players to be shown the door.

Versatile full-back Matteo Darmian has had a torrid time at United since former manager Louis Van Gaal brought him to the club in 2015. It is the belief amongst many of our punters that, alongside the likes of Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria, Darmian was up there with LVG’s worst signings.

Indeed, he’s failed to impress this season too, starting only twice, despite Jose Mourinho not having an established left-back all term.

However, the Italian’s poor performance against Basel may have been the final nail in the coffin according to our landlord, with a host of clubs including Roma, Inter Milan and Napoli now circling to take him back to his native land of Italy.

Furthermore, Mourinho has been instructed to sell before he can buy and he’ll be looking to rid the squad of some deadwood, so offloading the Italian would be a good move all round.

Some of the local Mancs take a look at a couple of reasons why selling Darmian is a must in January.

Lack of Trust

Since Mourinho took over the reigns at Old Trafford, Darmian’s playing time has decreased drastically to a couple of starts this season. It’s well documented that the Portuguese man likes specialist in every position and although Darmian has versatility, he’s never shone in either role which would have diminished Mourinho’s trust over time.

Doesn’t have a natural home, a big no-no for Mourinho.

Not a United Player

Over his short United career, you could argue that Damian could be one of the worst United full-backs in many a year. The Red Devils have been blessed with some world-class and consistent full-backs over the Premier League era with the likes of Gary Neville, Denis Irwin and Patrice Evra to name a few creating a high standard of weekly performances.

The Italian clearly isn’t at this level.
