If there’s one subject that divides Liverpool fans it’s their team’s ownership, with some very much in the Fenway Sports Group camp, while others actively rage at the Americans for what they perceive to be failings in their running of the club.
The Stateside group, fronted by John W Henry, purchased the Reds from Tom Hicks and George Gillett back in 2010 when they were on the verge of bankruptcy and have gone about rebuilding the Merseysiders, putting those dark days in the past.
The unveiling of the new Main Stand at Anfield at the start of this season was seen as the latest big achievement in their reign at Liverpool, which has also included bringing in significant sponsorship deals, attracting Jurgen Klopp and getting the club back on safe ground after past monetary worries.
Alas, FSG’s spell has coincided with some pretty bleak seasons and most summers have been filled with top players moving away to join ‘bigger’ outfits. Last year’s positive net spend has angered many given that holes in Klopp’s squad have been exposed, and a Q&A with the Liverpool Echo’s James Pearce in which he claimed this is an off-season in which the owners need to “prove” themselves in terms of backing their manager has helped to stir the pot.
Naturally, many Kopites are sceptical about this happening, and here are some of the best tweets on the subject…
