When Wolverhampton Wanderers signed Patrick Cutrone for €18 million (£15.9 million) from AC Milan back on the 30th July last year, he was perhaps bought to ease the burden on free-scoring Raul Jimenez up front. Instead, his time at the Midlands club could not have been much worse so far.
Fresh after scoring nine goals and providing two assists in 43 appearances in all competitions last season, Cutrone would have hoped to get off the mark early in his debut campaign in England. Instead, Jimenez was grabbing all of the headlines once again as the 22-year-old just sat there and watched.
Cutrone saw the 29-year old bag no less than 17 strikes in all competitions before the turn of the new year, as the Italian international scored just three times, according to Transfermarkt.

Consequently, this saw his market value during his short spell at Molineux fall from €25 million to €20 million, as per the website. It must be noted that this is still higher than the figure paid for him, but things started to go even more downhill from there.
Cutrone was shipped out on loan to Fiorentina in the January transfer window for a fee of €3 million, and his market value has decreased since. The centre-forward is currently valued at just €15.5 million, less than what Wolves paid for him.
Nevertheless, there were high hopes when he signed on the dotted line, as sporting director Kevin Thelwell was ‘delighted’ that WWFC had signed such a ‘talented young Italian’ (via the club’s official website).
Perhaps it is too early to judge, but Cutrone does look to be a waste of money already.
