With a bumper new stadium and a Champions League final to look forward to, all is well with the world for Tottenham fans at the moment. Mauricio Pochettino’s side are also seemingly open to splashing the cash this summer, and a whole host of names have been linked with a move to north London. One man Spurs supporters would have been dreaming of is Marco Asensio, but unfortunately for the Premier League side, it appears Real Madrid may have other plans for the star.
According to Spanish publication AS, Spurs enquired about the Spaniard for a second season in a row earlier this week, but that it was immediately knocked back. The report claimed Madrid insisted that the Lilywhites pay Asensio’s €700m release clause if they wanted to sign him, and unfortunately for Pochettino and Spurs, that’s an amount perhaps slightly out of the club’s price range.
Upon seeing the figures, many fans took to Twitter to joke about how they would go about paying Asensio’s fee, with some suggesting that the club sell their new stadium to pay for it, and then simply play all their games next season in a car park.
Indeed, with Daniel Levy notoriously frugal with his money, Spurs supporters joked that the club’s chairman would play hardball with Madrid and only go up to €680m.
