Speaking to Football Insider, regular talkSPORT pundit Darren Bent has shed light on Tottenham star Serge Aurier following his improved run of form this season – coming after a past claim which suggested that he was ‘terrible‘ for the Lilywhites.
Aurier, who has looked rejuvenated for the most part this season under Spurs boss Jose Mourinho, coming after the summer signing of Matt Doherty, has now been praised by Bent after his improved form.
Bent drops Aurier claim
The Ivorian has featured regularly for Tottenham whilst impressing at right-back, leading to claims he will be offered a new deal as Daniel Levy looks to keep hold of the defensive machine.
Shedding light on his past ‘mistakes’, Bent has claimed that could have been down to Mauricio Pochettino and his coaching style – with the former Lilywhites striker crediting Mourinho for Aurier and his resurgence back into the first team.
“I think often me and you have kind of ridiculed him a little bit about how bad he’s been but to be fair to him, he’s stepped up, he’s been very good this season,” explained the talkSPORT regular.
“Maybe it’s the coaching because, under Pochettino, he used to make a lot of mistakes but its like Mourinho’s come in, addressed it and maybe said to him: ‘You need to be better defensively,’ and he’s bought into what Mourinho’s doing.
“All of a sudden you start thinking ‘he’s actually alright, he’s doing really well’, so I think Mourinho’s got to take a lot of credit.”
Transfer Tavern take
Indeed, once described as ‘terrible’ by sections of the media, Aurier now looks reborn – and it’s little wonder why Levy is considering a new deal for the full-back.
Time will tell whether he gets tied down along with crucial ace Heung-min Son, but his recent performances have done absolutely no harm.
