Tottenham Hotspur: Fans can’t believe Harry Maguire didn’t get the same punishment as Son Heung-min

Maguire

Loads of Tottenham Hotspur fans were left stunned on Monday night following an incident which happened in Manchester United’s 2-0 victory away at Chelsea.

Whilst it was a good night for the Red Devils, it could have been very different had centre-back Harry Maguire been given a red card in the first half. The England international appeared to kick out at Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi (@SkySportsMNF) and whilst referee Anthony Taylor didn’t see anything untoward, VAR did have a look at the incident. However, the technology bizarrely decided that there was no violent conduct and Maguire therefore escaped punishment totally, not even receiving a yellow card never mind a red.

The decision irked a large section of Spurs supporters, who insisted that the incident was identical to one which saw Son Heung-min sent off in December, ironically also in a game against Chelsea. The South Korean, like Maguire, kicked out at an opponent but on that occasion, VAR intervened and the 27-year-old was dismissed (Sky Sports).

Is VAR ruining football?

After seeing the decision on Monday, plenty of Tottenham fans took to Twitter to express their frustrations that the two incidents were not treated equally, with some slamming both the officiating and VAR as ‘disgraceful’.

Here is what some had to say…

That is shocking. 😳

Joke var is a license to cheat. COYS

Difference is VAR is an unaccountable tool by which @premierleague can manipulate results to favour the teams ‘sponsored’ by @SkySportsPL @SkySports officials have never been impartial, even worse now you cant even see them. Are impartial officials really sitting in a room?

I honestly feel that spurs should demand an explanation from the FA as to how that wasn’t a red

Disgraceful

— Taylor (@tbenner22) February 17, 2020

There is no difference

— Colin Grainger (@ColinAGrainger) February 17, 2020

The officiating in this league is a total shambles. Not surprised in the slightest that it was the spurs player who got penalised.

Spurs fans, should Harry Maguire have seen red like Son? Let us know your thoughts below…
