Several Tottenham Hotspur fans have been getting excited after reading a statistic to do with Jose Mourinho’s Champions League record.
Indeed, on two occasions prior to this season, the Portuguese has managed a team for a full season that has finished second in the group stage of the competition and both times he ended up going on to win it.
His Porto team in the 2003/04 season finished second behind Real Madrid in the group before going on to lift the trophy (UEFA.com), whilst at Inter Milan in 2009/10, his team were runners-up to Barcelona but still managed to win the tournament (UEFA.com).
Whilst he did finish second with Manchester United in 2018/19, he was sacked before the knockout stages began so couldn’t go on to win it.
Spurs, of course, have finished second in their group behind Bayern Munich in the Champions League this season (BBC Sport), leading to plenty of fans getting excited, hoping that lightning strikes for a third time and they go on to win Europe’s elite club competition.
