With Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 up against Southampton after half an hour, things were going to plan until Serge Aurier got sent off.
The 26-year-old was given his marching orders after receiving his second yellow card of the game for pulling back Ryan Bertrand, as shown in the highlights video on the Sky Sports Football YouTube channel.
It was understandable that the tone of Spurs’ tweet about it wasn’t too enthusiastic:
31 – @Serge_Aurier is shown a second yellow card and we’re down to 10 men.

Many Spurs fans weren’t very happy with the Ivory Coast international, with one saying they remember why Mauricio Pochettino didn’t want to pick him in the past, while another referred to him as a ‘double-edged sword’.
Aurier will likely have felt as though he has managed to get away with one after being sent off so early, as Spurs eventually went on to win 2-1 thanks to a Harry Kane goal.
A selection of Twitter reaction to the sending off, including posts from frustrated Spurs fans, can be seen below:
Serge Aurier is such a double-edged sword. Can be an incredible attacking talent but so daft defensively.

Shock. Not. Anyone who wanted him in this team as a long term is a fool. Always makes dumb decisions, ridiculous scissor challenge and now ridiculous positioning and decision making
