Writing for football.london, journalist Alasdair Gold has gave a 10/10 match rating for the superb performance of Toby Alderweireld after his integral showing against Man City – with the Belgian later having to come off with what could be a serious injury.
Alderweireld, who partnered Eric Dier in central defence to devastating effect, halting wave after wave of City attack, could now be absent from Jose Mourinho’s team for an extended period after picking up a muscular injury.
This comes as a huge blow to the Spurs boss after he put in such a solid performance against the Sky Blues, making challenge after challenge in the first half and halting an equaliser from Gabriel Jesus.
Heung-min Son gave Tottenham an early lead, but Mourinho’s side were under the cosh from that point onwards in the first half – with Spurs sitting back and trying to protect their slender advantage until Giovani Lo Celso nicked a second on the break.
Alderweireld emerged as a colossal figure in keeping City from drawing level, with Gold claiming Spurs will ‘really miss him’ if he his ruled out for an extended period of time.
Transfer Tavern take
Described as a ‘leader‘ by ex-Tottenham hero Paul Robinson, the Belgium international has been a mainstay in Mourinho’s defence since he opted to drop Davinson Sanchez out of the last few matchday squads.
Now, with the 31-year-old facing a leave of absence, Spurs supporters will be anxious to find out who their new defensive lynchpin could be in the coming weeks.
Dier also proved to be effective against City, with the likelihood being he will partner summer signing Joe Rodon over the next few Premier League games.
