Speaking to Football Insider, whilst imploring Spurs boss Jose Mourinho to start ‘fantastic signing‘ Joe Rodon, Paul Robinson also claims that Tottenham had been ‘trailing him for a while’ before they secured a deal.
Rodon, who put pen to paper on an £11 million move from Swansea on EFL deadline day, emerged as a top target at the beginning of October – with Sky Sports claiming that a deal was ‘close’ at the end of the summer window.
Rodon on Spurs radar for a while
Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold then confirmed that Rodon was on Daniel Levy’s radar as the club began to plot a swoop, with Spurs eventually going on to secure him as their seventh and final signing.
Now, speaking to Football Insider, pundit Paul Robinson, who often appears on Sky Sports, has revealed that Rodon was actually a player the club had been ‘trailing for a while’ – with the exact time frame currently unknown.
“I’d like to see him play, I rate him,” said the former Tottenham goalkeeper.
“I think he’s a top defender. The fact that Spurs didn’t go into the European market and he’s a player they’ve trailed for a while tells you a lot.
“I think he will improve, there’s a lot more to come.”
Transfer Tavern take
Yet to play a game for Spurs, with the 22-year-old signing too late to register for the Europa League, Rodon could potentially make an appearance against Burnley on Monday.
The 6ft 4 powerhouse, who joins fellow Welsh internationals Gareth Bale and Ben Davies at Hotspur Way, adds to Jose Mourinho’s backline and gives him another option after Spurs’ proposed deal for Milan Skriniar fell through.
As well as hinting that Tottenham have had their eye on him for a while, Robinson has lauded the signing of a ‘top player’ – suggesting that it is only a matter of time before he gets his chance to shine under Mourinho.
