Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has been raving about the debut performance of Tottenham Hotspur forward Steven Bergwijn.
The Dutch international joined Spurs from PSV Eindhoven in the January transfer window for a fee of £27 million (BBC Sport).
He was quickly thrown into first team action by Jose Mourinho, starting in their Premier League fixture against Manchester City on Sunday. He performed excellently in his first appearance for the club, scoring a brilliant opening goal and helping them to a 2-0 win against the current champions (Sky Sports).
Whelan was highly impressed by the 22-year-old’s display and insisted that Spurs fans will be itching to see more of the Dutch international in the coming weeks. When discussing Bergwijn’s debut, Whelan told Football Insider: “Fantastic player. You can see why Jose has gone out there and brought him in.
“An abundance of pace and a well-taken goal as well. That is not an easy finish by any stretch of the imagination. On the chest, the ball was sitting low – a fantastic volley. He looks really exciting and I think Tottenham fans will be chomping at the bit to see a bit more of him.

“He wants to progress his career and everybody wants to play in the Premier League. He has come to a fantastic club with a great stadium, fantastic facilities, great team-mates. Harry Kane will thrive off him as well.”
Whelan is right; Bergwijn was certainly impressive on his Tottenham Hotspur debut. Indeed, as well as scoring a brilliant goal, the winger completed one successful dribble whilst also showing some defensive qualities by winning two ground duels, one aerial duel, one tackle and making one interception (SofaScore).
As the former Leeds man suggests, fans may already have fallen in love with the Dutch winger and will be desperate to see more of him. They will also hope that he can continue to score goals too, given that their main man Harry Kane is set to be out until May according to Mourinho (BBC Sport).
Along with Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura, Bergwijn could form part of a frightening front three which will have pace in abundance and, if they have a cutting edge, could help Spurs secure a place in the top four.
