Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs offered chance to sign Watford striker Troy Deeney as cover for Harry Kane

Tottenham Hotspur could make a surprise move for Watford striker Troy Deeney after the Hornets were relegated from the Premier League on the final day of the season.

It’s no secret that Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho wants to find a backup for Harry Kane this summer as Spurs struggled to score during his long absence due to injury.

Where did Mauricio Pochettino complete his playing career?

According to The Daily Mail, as relayed by Ricky Sacks, Watford want to offload Deeney and other big earners to reduce their wage bill before they drop to the Championship and Mourinho is interested in the club captain, who has been at Vicarage Road since 2010, racking up nearly 400 appearances for the Hornets so far.

The Lilywhites have allowed Troy Parrott to leave for Millwall on loan, leaving the England international as the only recognised striker at the club.

Spurs are interested in signing Deeney on a season-long loan although this could be a problem as he only has a year left to run on his current contract.

Deeney, 32, scored 10 goals in 27 games in the Premier League this season, having bagged 133 goals in 398 games for the Hornets in all competitions.

Despite his best efforts, he couldn’t stop Watford from dropping down to the Championship, but could be a valuable asset on the bench.

Mourinho has a history of deploying powerful forwards to dominate defences, as he famously used Didier Drogba and Diego Costa to great effect during his two spells in charge of Chelsea, and Deeney is cut from a similar cloth.

He is strong in the air and has shown no signs of shying away from a tackle (or two), and would add another attacking element to a Spurs side that have often been accused of being too one-directional in the past.

It is highly unlikely Daniel Levy will have to splash the cash to sign Deeney in the summer, who is currently valued at £5.85m via Transfermarkt, and he may be a shrewd signing to make as he surely can’t be any worse than the likes of Roberto Soldado and Vincent Janssen in north London.
