Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs lead Man United in race to sign Thomas Meunier

Tottenham Hotspur are in talks with Paris Saint-Germain star Thomas Meunier’s agent ahead of a potential move this summer.

According to the Daily Express, Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has been monitoring Meunier for several months and has identified the defender as a viable option for his defence.

Spurs will have barely any money to spend in the summer and the club are looking to sign free agents or organise swap deals to add depth in the squad. Meunier’s contract with PSG is set to expire at the end of the season and the French champions have made him available on the market in the summer.

Mourinho has reportedly already called the Belgian international in an attempt to persuade him to move to north London.

The right-back, who can also play in midfield, is represented by Pini Zahavi, who is widely credited with bringing Mourinho to England in the first place. The super-agent famously helped get Neymar’s world-record transfer from Barcelona to PSG over the line.

The 28-year-old played 16 games in Ligue 1 this season, supplying two assists, winning 1.7 tackles per game and averaging 1.1 interceptions per game (WhoScored). He is currently valued at £21.6m via Transfermarkt.

It is fair to say that the Lilywhites need to address the issues on the right flank, as Serge Aurier has struggled for consistency this season. Indeed, the Ivorian has made a number of high-profile mistakes on and off the pitch so far, including breaching lockdown rules for a third time last month.

As it stands, Mourinho is on the hunt for a new full-back, and Meunier fits the profile of the type of player he is looking for. The Belgian is close friends with his international teammate Toby Alderweireld, which could pave the way for a move to Tottenham.

However, Daniel Levy faces competition from Premier League rivals Liverpool and Manchester United, although it seems Spurs are leading the race to sign the PSG veteran.

Tottenham fans, should Levy sign Thomas Meunier in the summer? Let us know in the comments below!
