Tottenham scout Vertonghen transfer replacement?

Jan VertonghenThere are some shocking revelations for Tottenham in the Football Transfer Tavern this evening.

Tom Collomosse from the London Evening Standard has arrived for a post-work beer with news that Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen could depart White Hart Lane if the club fail to make next season’s Champions League.

The 26-year-old Belgian international has become of the club’s key player since his arrival from Ajax in 2012 while also confirming himself as one of the best defenders in the English league.

Collomose suggests that Vertonghen will be offered an extension to his current deal at White Hart Lane, despite a four-year contract already in Spurs’ favour.

Defeat to Benfica in the Europa League probably ends any hope in that competition and Tottenham must get something against north rivals Arsenal on Sunday to stand any hopes of achieving Champions League football.

He is not the first Spurs player to outline his desire to feature in Europe’s elite competition after keeper Hugo Lloris confirmed he would consider a move if they missed out on Champions League football again.

Meanwhile, the club are understood to be considering a move for Ajax defensive midfielder Daley Blind – who can also interestingly play at centre and left back – with Daniel Levy sending scouts to watch him in recent weeks.

Do you think that Spurs can keep hold of their talented defender? Let us know your thoughts below.
