Speaking to Football Insider, Darren Bent gave his verdict on Antonio Rudiger and his situation at Chelsea – going on to hint that he would make Spurs ‘stronger’ – coming after fellow pundit Kevin Phillips claimed a ‘deal could happen‘ in January as Tottenham continue their defensive search.
During the summer window, Spurs listed a number of centre-back targets as key reinforcements for manager Jose Mourinho – with the club reportedly eyeing moves for both Antonio Rudiger and Milan Skriniar.
Should Spurs swoop for Rudiger in January?
Not a chance
Rudiger and the defensive search
The latter man was seemingly Tottenham’s top target, but on deadline day, talks broke down over a potential move due to both the Lilywhites and Inter Milan being too far apart in terms of valuation (Alasdair Gold).
A deal also failed to materialise for Rudiger, with Football Insider reporting that it collapsed in the final hours.
Spurs looked to the EFL bonus window for answers, eventually signing Swansea City star Joe Rodon who has largely been tipped as one for the future.
According to reports, Spurs still have their eye on defensive targets, and Bent has now hinted that Rudiger would make Spurs a ‘stronger’ side much to the detriment of their London rivals.
“I thought he’d get a lot more game time because I like Rudiger, I think he’s a very good player,” explained the ex-Tottenham forward.
I like him, I think he’s a good defender, but clearly something’s gone on down there for that to happen.
“The last thing I would want to if I was Frank Lampard, it’s all well and good not liking him or trusting him, that’s each to their own, but you don’t want to see him go to your rivals in Spurs and help them.
“Why would you want to make your rivals stronger? I’ve never understood that.”
Transfer Tavern take
If he wishes to make the cut for Germany, a move may be on the cards, and Tottenham have largely been tipped with the most interest.
