According to Spanish outlet Diario AS, the chances of Real Madrid activating their buy-back clause to re-sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Sergio Reguilon have become smaller and smaller – with the current economic climate and Zinedine Zidane’s distaste for the player now making the Spaniard their ‘most complicated‘ left-back transfer option.
Reguilon signed in the summer of 2020, coming to north London with fellow Galacticos outcast Gareth Bale but the pair couldn’t be going through more different spells at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Reguilon breakdown for Spurs
Bale has been reduced to the fringes of Jose Mourinho’s plans amid claims Spurs should opt out of signing him on a permanent deal if he continues his current run of form (Dimitar Berbatov to Stats Perform, via onefootball).
Meanwhile, Reguilon has stood out as arguably one of the Lilywhites’ most fruitful summer purchases with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – evident by pundit Kevin Phillips recently branding him a ‘shining light for Spurs’ (Football Insider).
Now, Diario AS, as translated and relayed via Sport Witness, claim he has now become the ‘most complicated’ option for Real as they search for a new left-back to succeed Brazilian ace Marcelo.
Club president Florentino Perez famously inserted a buy-back clause into the deal which allowed Spurs to sign Reguilon, meaning if Real decide to activate it, both Mourinho and chairman Daniel Levy would be powerless to stop him leaving.
Transfer Tavern take
The likelihood of that happening this summer has now reduced, however, in potentially good news for Spurs – with Zidane’s presence making Reguilon the most complicated transfer target in a time where the club’s finances are also uncertain.
As a result, other Galacticos candidates such as Fran García, Miguel Gutiérrez, Rafel Obrador and David de la Vibora have now emerged as much better options for them to pursue.
In this potential boost for Tottenham, Reguilon looks likely to remain in the English capital, and Lilywhites will be hoping the odds can grow more in their favour as he continues to shine.
