After a quiet January transfer window last season, in which Tottenham did not bring in a single player, a deadline day swoop for Lucas Moura for £23m was just the thing to increase optimism amongst fans.
The Brazilian (valued at £25.2m on Transfermarkt.co.uk) had endured a tough first half of the season at French giants PSG, falling behind Neymar and Kylian Mbappé in the pecking order under Unai Emery, only making six substitute appearances. He was in need of a change, and Mauricio Pochettino gave him his opportunity.
This move excited a lot of Tottenham fans, who had grown restless over their club’s inactivity throughout January. It was more a sense of relief than anything else for fans, but Moura’s raw pace offered something that Tottenham were potentially lacking.

However, the move did not enthral all fans of The Lilywhites. Some saw this as a fairly uninspired choice, believing Moura would not make it into the starting XI. The question remained as to why PSG were willing to sell a player so cheap, meaning he potentially wasn’t as great a coup as people believed it was.

Six months later, and Moura is winning over a lot of his early critics. Despite not having the most prominent role at the back end of the 2017/18 season, he has started this one with a bang. Three goals in four games, as well as Player of the Month nomination and a Man of the Match performance against Man United at Old Trafford, means the 26-year-old is becoming a key man under Mauricio Pochettino.
Fans are starting to realise what an asset the Brazilian may be for the club, and a praising the impact that he has had on the north London club so far this season. The £23m is starting to look like very good value for money.
