Transfer Flashback: Terence Kongolo joins Huddersfield Town

Share

When Huddersfield Town announced that they had agreed a permanent deal to bring Terence Kongolo back to the John Smith’s Stadium, the club’s supporters were understandably delighted.

The defender was one of the Terriers’ stand-out performers whilst on loan from AS Monaco during the 2017/18 season which saw the Yorkshire-outfit secure a miraculous survival under the guidance of then-boss David Wagner.

Having excelled whilst on loan with the Terriers, many thought that Kongolo would continue his development this year. Unfortunately, however, this has not been the case for the defender. Despite featuring in 27 of his side’s Premier League matches, he has been unable to save them in what has been one of the worst seasons statistically in the club’s history.

Already relegated to the Championship, Huddersfield are on course to record their lowest amount of victories in a single campaign (3) whilst five defeats in their final five games would consign them to the second-lowest amount of points ever in the top-flight.

Although a whole host of players are expected to leave the club in the summer, manager Jan Siewert may want to keep Kongolo who arguably deserves a chance to prove himself in the second tier.

An undoubtedly talented player, the 25-year-old still has a bright future ahead of him in football yet it is ultimately his decision whether to stay in West Yorkshire or move on when the transfer window opens in July.
