In the latest instalment of the Transfer Scenarios feature, we take a look at the potential consequences of a move for Serge Aurier from Tottenham Hotspur to AC Milan.
Italian outlet Sport Mediaset have reported that AC Milan have shown an interest in signing Tottenham Hotspur right-back Serge Aurier, as worries regarding Andrea Conti have grown.
The Ivory Coast international is open to a move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, according to The Express.
Kyle Walker-Peters’ position strengthened
Kyle Walker-Peters and Serge Aurier have had to share the Premier League minutes at right-back for Spurs so far this season, with the former having made 3 appearances and the latter making 2, as per WhoScored.
It can be argued that Aurier has actually had a better start to the season in terms of his performances, having an average match rating of 7.20 compared to Walker-Peters’ 6.77 – while the Ivorian has an assist to his name, playing the ball that led to Patrick van Aanholt’s own goal and showed his striking ability against Leicester City for the goal that was disallowed through no fault of his own.
It is unclear who Mauricio Pochettino prefers as of yet, but not having Aurier as competition would definitely strengthen Walker-Peters’ position as the club’s main right-back.
Andre Conti becomes available
Andrea Conti is the player Serge Aurier is being targeted to replace, so with Davide Calabria around, it is surely unlikely Milan would keep the 25-year-old, as that would mean accommodating three right-backs.
Conti has struggled since moving to Milan in the summer of 2017, managing just 21 matches in all competitions, with only nine of those being starts, as per Transfermarkt.
However, the strength of his performances at Atalanta, which caught the interest of the likes of Chelsea, Napoli and Inter, as reported by The Daily Star at the time, indicate that if the Italian is able to settle at a club, he could become an asset for them should Aurier not arrive.
Mauricio Pochettino questioned
Many Spurs supporters have been keen on Aurier recently, so if that continues and he is allowed to leave, this could leave to Mauricio Pochettino’s decision being questioned by some sections of the fanbase.
Indeed, we have recently seen that many Spurs fans are not scared to condemn the club’s manager, as they did following the 2-2 Champions League draw against Olympiacos, so if they aren’t happy with the decision to let him leave, it could add to the problems in North London.
