TT Battles: Paul Pogba vs Lucas Torreira

Manchester United have been a huge disappointment in the Premier League this season, while Arsenal have defied expectations under Unai Emery.

The Red Devils will be desperate to climb up the table and secure a top four spot after struggling to ensure consistency towards the start of the season. Meanwhile, Arsenal are in the running for a top four spot and continue to impress under the guidance of Unai Emery.

Interestingly, the international break is set to bring about a matchup that features two Premier League players that are yet to meet this season. Paul Pogba has been ruled out of joining up with his national side due to injury but Pogba’s France are set to face up against Lucas Torreira’s Uruguay during the international break.

With that in mind, let’s compare these two transfers…

PAUL POGBA

Paul Pogba joined Manchester United from Juventus for a then world record fee of £93.2 million back in 2016 as Ed Woodward had his eyes set on world domination.

The Frenchman has managed to produce a consistent amount goals and assists since joining the Red Devils, but his performances have been nothing in comparison to his time over in Italy.

Indeed, the central midfielder currently has five goals and four assists to his name in the current campaign, but has spent the large majority of the season receiving criticism from supporters and is constantly in a dispute with Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.

United were a laughing stock during the summer as everything was a total mess at Old Trafford, with Paul Pogba causing more trouble off the field than good on it as Ed Woodward struggled to keep things under wraps.

LUCAS TORREIRA

Lucas Torreira joined Arsenal from Italian side Sampdoria for £26.5 million during the summer months as he enjoyed a successful World Cup with his home nation Uruguay.

Interestingly, the defensive midfielder has been one of the standout performers for the Gunners this season and will play a huge part in their campaign from here on in. The South American adopts a dogged approach that has caused the opposition plenty of trouble at times, with two assists to his name also.

Arsenal have been heavily reliant upon the 22-year-old at times and can thank him for helping them pick up valuable points already this season, so it’s safe to say that Emery found himself a bargain gem.

TT VERDICT:

When comparing these two, it’s clear to see that Lucas Torreira has made the bigger impact in the current campaign for the Gunners, while Paul Pogba has produced a couple of breathtaking moments but still lacks consistency.

The Uruguayan has been a solid barrier in the middle of Arsenal’s midfield this season as one of the rising stars in world football, with a number of incredible performances already under his belt.

Meanwhile, Paul Pogba has managed to provide assists and goals for United this season but his off-field antics have had a negative affect on the club’s position this season.

Both players will play a huge part for their respective clubs this season and have bright futures ahead of them, but it’s Torreira that has proved to be a bargain for the Gunners already, with Pogba still yet to live up to his hefty price tag.
