Manchester United duo Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho have hinted that their futures may be away from Old Trafford following a disappointing Europa League defeat to Tottenham. The defeat puts the icing on the cake of what was already the club’s worst ever campaign, and sees United miss out on European football entirely next season.
It also sees the club miss out on a possible £100 million in Champions League revenue, which Fernandes admits could force the club to “cash in” on some of their star assets.
As reported by ESPN, Fernandes spoke after the match saying that he intends to stay at the club but is open to departing should the club decide the time is right.
“I’ve always said I will be here until the club says to me that it’s time to go,” said the Portuguese midfielder.
“I’m eager to do more, to be able to bring the club to the great days.”
Fernandes opens door to United departure
“On the day that the club thinks that I’m too much or it’s time to part ways, football is like this, you never know it.”
“But I’ve always said it and I keep my word in the same way. If the club thinks it’s time to part ways because they want to do some cashing in or whatever, it’s what it is. Football sometimes is like this.”
Fernandes’ sentiments were matched by teammate Alejandro Garnacho, who was disappointed not only in the result of the match and the season on a whole, but in his limited involvement in the final.
Garnacho was a late substitute as United looked to claw themselves back into the game, and looked a frustrated figure throughout. He used a certain four letter expletive to express his thoughts afterwards.
“Obviously it’s hard for everyone after this season which was s—; both for losing the final and because we didn’t beat anyone in the league,” he said.
“It’s the truth. It’s very hard. We’re going to try to finish the season and see what happens next.”
Garnacho hints at United exit
“There were a lot of things missing. When you don’t score goals you always need more things. I’ve played all the rounds until the final, I’ve helped the team… And to play only 20 minutes today… I don’t know.”

“The game has an influence but so does the season. The situation of the club… But I’m going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens next.”
Both players have been the subject of transfer interest in the recent past, with Fernandes attracting interest from Real Madrid and Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal. The latter was reportedly ready to offer the player a lucrative contract said to be worth a staggering £65m per year.
Garnacho was the subject of a bid from Italian club Napoli in January, with the deal reportedly stalling due to the player’s wage demands.
Chelsea have also shown interest in the 20 year old winger, and since Garnacho is an academy graduate any fee generated would represent pure profit for United.
The lack of European football next season – and the revenue that comes with it – means United’s wage bill may need trimming this summer.
On loan trio Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Antony are all expected to depart this summer and United could sanction even more sales should they receive significant bids.
