Rangers: Gerrard in for Van Bronckhorst?

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has shared some insight into the future of Giovanni van Bronckhorst at Glasgow Rangers, citing former manager Steven Gerrard’s availability.

The Lowdown: Under pressure

After a 1-1 draw at home to Livingston in the Scottish Premiership last weekend was followed up by a 3-0 humbling at the hands of Napoli in the UEFA Champions League, Van Bronckhorst is now a man under pressure to keep his job at Ibrox.

They have already failed to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League, sitting bottom of their group with no points and an -18 goal difference, while they are also four points behind bitter rivals Celtic in the SPFL title race.

There have been some suggestions that he has lost the dressing room, and with Gerrard now available after being sacked by Aston Villa, one could speculate whether the Gers could turn to their old boss to replace Van Bronckhorst.

The Latest: On the brink?

Speaking to The Transfer Tavern, O’Rourke has suggested that Van Bronckhorst is on the brink of the sack, with ‘any more bad results’ putting increasing pressure on him, as well as the fact that Gerrard is currently out of a job:

“Van Bronckhorst is under growing pressure at Rangers. Dropped points at the weekend against Livingston, they were booed off at half-time and at full-time, and their results in the Champions League have been really disappointing up to now as well.

“Any more bad results or dropped points could see the pressure increase even more on Van Bronckhorst, and when you’ve got someone like Steven Gerrard hanging over you, that is always going to increase pressure on his job as well.”

The Verdict: Back to Gerrard?

If Van Bronckhorst does get the sack soon, which looks likely, then the Light Blues could do far worse than turning back to Gerrard.

Of course, he helped them lift the Scottish Premiership title in the 2020/21 season, stopping Celtic winning ten in a row.

The 42-year-old also gave league debuts to the likes of Nathan Patterson and Joe Aribo, who have both earned moves to the Premier League, and signed a number of top players like Ryan Kent and Connor Goldson, who are still in the first team under Van Bronckhorst.

Nonetheless, Gerrard already knows the club and the league, so replacing Van Bronckhorst with him is something that the Teddy Bears should at least be considering.
