Our Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that next season can be a year to finally bring some silverware into the club under Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool’s defensive fragilities this season has been there for everyone to see, though with the arrival of Virgil Van Dijk in the winter window, next season Klopp will be looking for more of a settled back five. Indeed, many feel that’s all that is holding him back this season.

One of the main priorities for Klopp is to sort the goalkeeping situation out, without a doubt. This season, he has chopped and changed between Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet, a policy that hasn’t really helped anyone at all. This confusion at the back has probably aided towards the defensive nervousness, many of our regulars feel.

The resident Reds in the bar are ready to welcome Roma and Brazilian number one Alisson to the club in the summer, following reports of interest were registered in January. Indeed, his arrival would surely give the club their best backline in absolute years, perhaps since Rafa Benitez’s days in charge.

With the possible arrival of a new goalkeeper, our landlord takes a look at what the defence could turn out like next season…

Alisson

The Brazilian goalkeeper is a superb shot-stopper and is at his best when the ball is in the box. This can only breed confidence into a back-line that has made many mistakes in and around the box this season which has led sometimes to game-changing goals.

The addition of a permanent No.1 between the posts will settle everything down and take the focus off the defence.

Nathaniel Clyne

The England right-back has been injured for much of this season and has missed out on many a game. However, he still remains the first choice fullback and next year will surely look to get a full pre-season behind him in a bid to rediscover his blistering form.

Providing pace and attacking options, Clyne can be a Klopp player for many years to come, according to our punters in the back room.

Dejan Lovren

The former Southampton player has hooked up with another former Saints defender at the back in what looks like the start of a defensive pairing. With the arrival of Van Dijk, many in the bar believe this as actually improved Lovren as a player and given him more confidence at the back.

Klopp will be hoping that this can put an end to the defence talk and can start to build from the back.

Virgil Van Dijk

The arrival of the big Dutchman was much needed at Anfield and his world record fee is slowly looking like being worth it. Klopp has long needed a leader and a defensive organiser at the back to rally the troops. Many of the fans in the bar think that Van Dijk is the missing piece of the jigsaw and, bringing him together with Lovren may be a masterstroke.

Klopp will look to build the defence around Van Dijk in the future and many feel like he could be a future captain of the club.

Andy Robertson

The Scottish left-back has been very impressive and his performance against Man City summed up what he can bring to the team. He’s a presser and looks to play the simple pass, which is exactly what Klopp looks for in a player as he loves to play that high press attacking football.

With Robertson at left-back, it seems that Liverpool could have a player there for many years, in a similar mould to James Milner.
