West Brom have opened talks with Millwall winger Jed Wallace over a summer move to the Hawthorns, according to journalist Alan Nixon.
The Lowdown: Wallace shines for Millwall
The 28-year-old has enjoyed a productive spell in south London over the past five years, making a total of 259 appearances and scoring 42 goals along the way.
Wallace also appeared in 38 of his side’s 46 Championship matches in 2021/22, chipping in with six goals and 12 assists for good measure.
His contract expires at the end of next month, however, and it looks likely that he will depart as a free agent and move elsewhere.
Will Steve Bruce get West Brom back into the Premier League?
Yes, we're going up!
Maybe next year
The Latest: West Brom open talks, Bruce a big fan
“Steve Bruce’s West Brom are trying to talk Jed Wallace into staying in the Championship. Bruce is keen to land the talented left-sided forward for his Baggies squad and offer him a lucrative package to join.
“Wallace is a free agent and his advisers are trying to find him a home in Europe where Turkish clubs have been alerted. But Bruce thinks he has a fighting chance of landing Wallace on good money that is still within his budget.”
The Verdict: Strong summer addition
It’s easy to see why Bruce thinks Wallace could be a great signing for West Brom ahead of what is hopefully a far better 2022/23 Championship campaign, having drifted away from the promotion fight this season.
His end product at Millwall speaks for itself and that is something the Baggies have lacked too often since August, with only 52 goals scored in 46 outings.
Wallace’s end product has been described as ‘unbelievable’ by former manager Gary Rowett in the past, and at 28, and he should remain in his peak years for some time yet.
The fact that he would arrive for free makes it even more of a no-brainer.
In other news, one West Brom player is set to be released. Find out who it is here.
