West Brom: Saido Berahino would love Hawthorns return

Saido Berahino

Former West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino has said that he would welcome a return to the Premier League club.

The Burundi international featured no fewer than 121 times for the Baggies during his time with the club, scoring 36 goals in all competitions. However, a potential move to Tottenham Hotspur notoriously fell through as interest quickly developed in the youngster whilst at West Brom.

A questionable attitude off the pitch didn’t help his cause, either, leading to a move to Stoke City which ultimately failed. Having departed England in 2019, the striker joined Belgium side Zulte Waregem and is now on loan with SC Charleroi.

What did Saido Berahino say about a potential return to the club?

Enjoying his football away from England, Berahino has bagged three goals and one assist in nine games this season for his current club, but he still holds fond memories of his time in the Midlands.

“That’s where everything started for me, ” he told Belgian media outlet DH. “Even today, I watch all their games on the TV. If I have the possibility of returning there, I won’t even think and I’ll speed there. At the time, I was young and through I could manage to do it on talent alone.

“My former manager, Steve Clarke, played an important role in my development by pushing me to work hard and make efforts for the team. He helped me open my eyes on the world of professional football”.

Would you take Berahino back at West Brom?

West Brom fans might be torn by Berahino’s comments, especially considering the various controversies which surrounded him during his time at the club.

Moving away from English football has certainly worked for the 27-year-old but, if it has also helped him mature, then a stint back in England may be the next career step. Maybe Berahino will still get the chance to leave a more cerebral legacy at The Hawthorns.
