During the Baggies most recent spell competing in the Premier League they spent millions of pounds to attract high profile players from all around the world, as well as from rival Premier League clubs. Up until the summer of 2014, West Brom’s previous record signing still stood from 2001-02 when English centre-forward Lee Hughes joined from Coventry for just over £8m. Incredibly, Hughes’ high money fee still stands as the Baggies eighth record signing almost 20 years later.
In 2014-15 however, Nigerian international striker Brown Ideye was brought in from Ukranian side Dynamo Kyiv for £11.37m, and this was the first time the club had ever spent over £10m on a player.
Despite his big-money move to the Premier League, Ideye moved to Greece, joining Olympiacos just after one season for a lowered £4.88m fee.
During the summer transfer window of 2015-16, arrived the club’s record signing which still stands to this day – Salomon Rondon. The Venezuelan international striker joined the Baggies for a massive £15m fee from Russian giants Zenit St. Petersburg after proving to be a fantastic talisman.
During four years at West Brom, Rondon racked up 24 goals in just over 100 games before joining Chinese Super League club Dalian Professional for a profitable £16.44m fee.
This makes Salomon Rondon the Baggies record transfer arrival and departure, and his record looks unlikely to be beaten any time soon, unless West Brom make a return to the top flight.
In 2016-17, Belgian international winger Nacer Chadli left Tottenham Hotspur for West Brom for a high £13.68m fee, and he is still the club’s joint-second record signing in history along with Oliver Burke. Burke left German side, RB Leipzig, for the Baggies in 2017, and the young Scottish winger only made 20 appearances before two loan spells, first at Celtic and then at Alaves where he is currently playing today.
In terms of other notable sales, there are not many players who have broken the £10m mark. Behind Rondon, was the £12.5m sale of Saido Berahino who left the Baggies for Stoke City in 2016-17, and Chadli’s £10.80m departure in 2018-19 makes him the club’s third highest sale of all time ahead of Curtis Davies’ £9m fee which was set back in 2008-09.
One of West Brom’s greatest signings is Chris Brunt who arrived for a small £3.4m fee from Sheffield Wednesday back in 2007. Since then, Brunt has appeared over 380 times for the Baggies and the former Northern Ireland international was made club captain in 2011.
