Some West Bromwich Albion fans would have already been in a foul mood after witnessing their side fall to Middlesbrough on Sunday afternoon, however the performance by Matt Phillips appeared to strike a nerve with many of them on Twitter.
Slaven Bilic’s side were beaten 2-0 in front of a Hawthorns crowd when Daniel Ayala and Ashley Fletcher both put the Baggies to the sword – leaving the hosts to sit second in the Championship table heading into the New Year’s Day encounter with the division’s new number one; Leeds United.
Whilst fans would have been infuriated with what they saw from an overall standpoint, many appeared to take aim at Phillips, with some not able to understand just how poor the Scotland international seems to have become.
One common theme that was thrown about for the 28-year-old was that he had been out of form for a period of time whilst others stated that they had felt the winger had been well off the pace for a while and that the Baggies need to enter the January market to find a potential replacement.
Here are just some of their reactions to Phillips’ latest showing…
January Window To-Do List (Thread)
1) Send Willock back if you’re not going to play him and replace him with at least one extra winger who can compete for a starting spot. Edwards not good enough to be starting and Phillips needs competition, he’s been awful recently #WBA

Phillips goes missing in too many games
Edwards not a first team player
Full backs have stopped going forward
Why do we play long ball against boro?
Brunt should have been involved for his distribution alone.— Luke Daniels (@westbromlad87) December 29, 2019

Woodgate: “We played two defensive midfielders to nullify Pereira. He’s their best player.”
And there’s our biggest problem. Right now if you stop Pereira, you stop us. Diangana being injured and Phillips woefully out of form means we’re very one dimensional.#wba

No time for panic. Concerning that likes of Phillips have seemed off the pace for weeks though. Our wide players don’t seem to want to take their man on. Need new faces in Jan #WBA

Can’t get over how poor Matt Phillips was today – offered nothing #wba

Matty Phillips has been miles off the pace in recent games for me. Missing Diangana more than expected too. Leeds next #WBA
