A number of horrified West Ham fans took to Twitter straight after the 2-0 loss to Bournemouth to criticise Andy Carroll, after the lanky striker missed what was basically an open goal at the Vitality Stadium.
The England international, making only his second Premier League start of the season, blazed over the bar from just a few yards out as he failed to take the chance to half the deficit.
The 30-year-old set up a glorious chance for Michail Antonio originally, but after the ball rebounded back to him, he got well under his effort, almost sending it out of the stadium.
Sadly, the miss was the icing on a particular nasty cake for the Hammers, as star striker Marko Arnautovic was dropped from the squad for the game against the Cherries amid speculation about his future.
For now, however, fans of the east Londoners could not believe how the former Newcastle forward scuppered such a golden opportunity, and feel he simply isn’t up to the standard required anymore…
I’ve watched the Carroll miss on repeat about 50 times and still haven’t come to some sort of logical conclusion as to how he’s missed that #COYI #WHUFC

Said it before but we need to get Andy Carroll out of this football club. Fine under big Sam but just doesn’t fit into this team. Injury prone and on massive wages – see ya #WHUFC

@Ing_Pellegrini please do not ever start Carroll for #WHUFC again. He gave no option at all for the midfield to pass to . That miss just has to tell you we need strikers brought in & quick.

Well, give him his dues. He did manage to get it over the oncoming keeper…
