West Ham: Hammers linked with summer move for Ollie Watkins

According to the Sun, West Ham are looking to sign Ollie Watkins from Brentford in the summer. The 22-year-old is enjoying a great season at the Championship side where he has scored 22 goals and assisted three (Transfermarkt).

Brentford are currently pushing for promotion as they sit in 5th place and Ollie Watkins has been crucial to this. The Hammers tried to sign Watkins in January but due to Brentford’s position in the table, the Championship club refused any approaches.

Jarrod Bowen, who scored on his full debut on the weekend, has started to display the success that can come with buying players from the Championship. Given their recent additions from across Europe — like Felipe Anderson (has scored just one league this season) — have not brought as much success as expected, West Ham should continue to do what has worked better for them and look to buy promising young players from the league below.

If West Ham do make a move for Watkins, then it could be a problem for £34m-rated Anderson (Transfermarkt). The winger has only scored 10 goals and provided eight assists since he arrived at the London Stadium from Lazio.

A move for Watkins would show intent and display good long-term planning given his age. If Brentford do not get promoted, then surely the attacker would consider a transfer across London in the summer.
