According to The Mirror, West Ham United are interested in signing Gabriel Barbosa from Flamengo this summer.

The Lowdown: Hammers eye a striker

The Hammers enjoyed a fantastic campaign last time out, finishing in sixth place in the Premier League - that means they have qualified for the Europa League group stages.

However, David Moyes will no doubt be looking to add a striker to his ranks before the end of the transfer window - as it stands he only has Michail Antonio available in that position.

The Latest: Irons eye Barbosa

Now, it is being reported that West Ham are interested in signing Barbosa.

Everton are also said to be in pursuit, with Brazilian outfit Flamengo looking for £40m to part ways with the nine-time Brazil international.

The Verdict: Top target

£23.4m-valued Barbosa (Transfermarkt) has long since been tipped to be a star ever since he burst onto the scene at Santos, where he netted 43 goals in 125 matches for Santos (Transfermarkt). That earned him a move to Internazionale, but it was a switch that just didn't work out - he only found the back of the net once in 10 games, and also struggled at Benfica on loan.

His return to Brazil, though, appears to have rejuvenated him. At Flamengo, he has managed a hugely impressive 70 goals in 98 matches, also providing 19 assists and helping his side win the Copa Libertadores along the way. Brazil legend Zico has also showered the forward in praise (via caughtoffside.com). At just 24 years of age, Barbosa has plenty of time to impress if he is given another chance in Europe - he should be a top target for Moyes and co.

In other news, West Ham fans were livid with this transfer update.
