Several of West Ham United’s players will see their current wages halved if the club is relegated from the Premier League to the Championship this season, according to a report from the Daily Mail.
It is suggested in the report that the “vast majority” of Hammers players have wage cuts written into their contracts in order to protect the club from financial difficulties if they do drop into the second tier. The specific percentage that each player will lose varies, but it is thought that quite a few of their top earners would lose 50%, and it is likely that those players would look to leave the club if they are relegated in order to avoid a huge drop in earnings.
As it stands relegation is a strong possibility for West Ham, with them sitting in the bottom three with just 13 matches left to play (BBC Sport).
However, despite reportedly facing a mass exodus of players if they go down due to wage cuts, it seems that several Irons fans wouldn’t be too upset to see the majority of their current team go. Indeed most suggest that there are only a handful that they would miss, here is what some had to say on Twitter…

Oh no how would we cope without all our fantastic hardworking talented superstars

Should have halved their wages since the start of season, not many of them deserve the pay they’re getting

Given how much the club clearly means to him, it will be gutting to see Declan Rice leave West Ham at the end of the season if and when we are relegated. Antonio and Fabianski would also be huge losses.

I’d only be sad to see rice, antonio and fabianski leave. The rest i will drive them to there new clubs
