Over the summer, Wolves made some very good signings in the transfer window including Rui Patricio and Joao Moutinho.
The Portuguese duo have both made impressive starts to the Premier League season while Raul Jimenez, who also arrived at Molineux prior to the beginning of this campaign, has also adapted well to English football.
One player, however, who has failed to make much of an impact at the newly-promoted Premier League side is Leander Dendoncker.
Seen as one of Belgian football’s most promising prospects, Dendoncker recently joined Wolves from Anderlecht on a loan deal which is expected to become a permanent transfer next summer.
But by then, though, Dendoncker’s heart may very well be elsewhere with the 23-year-old firmly on the periphery of Wolves’ squad. And in this moment of time, there is nothing to suggest that is going to change.
While £15.3m-rated (via Transfermarkt) Dendoncker is capable of playing in central defence, he is a midfielder by trade. However, there is a massive barrier preventing him from playing there that comes in the shape of Moutinho and the brilliant Ruben Neves.
Under Nuno Espirito Santo, the two Portugal internationals have struck up a fantastic partnership in the middle of the park, leaving Dendoncker in quite the predicament.
And with Nuno glued to the 3-4-3 formation he had so much success with during his time in the Championship, there is little chance of him changing things just to accommodate Dendoncker.
Considering that, playing at the back is probably the Belgium international’s best bet. But again, with Wolves’ defensive unit playing well as a whole, a needless introduction, which could disrupt the balance the 2018 Championship winners have found there, is also unlikely.
With that in mind, things do not look good for Dendoncker. And if things do not change, the former Anderlecht man should strongly consider pushing for a move away from the club at the end of the season. As things stand, his potential is being wasted away on the Molineux bench.
