What does the future hold for Mark Hughes following Les Reed’s departure?

Les Reed was sacked last week after the club decided a change needed to be made following their poor start to the season.

The former vice chairman had been in charge for eight years and over his time, he had been credited in changing Southampton’s ethos while also signing some superb players. The likes of Virgil van Dijk, Nathaniel Clyne, Sadio Mane and Victor Wanyama have all been signed during his time at the club and have all departed the club for large fees.

For years they have been able to sell off their main players while replacing them but recently it looks as though that policy has begun to stall and as a result, Southampton made the move to sack Reed.

With Reed now out of the picture, the spotlight is now on Mark Hughes to pick up some results and pull the club out of the current quagmire that they’re in. However, in truth, he’s not the man for the job.

Yes, the club’s transfer policy wasn’t always going to work but appointing Hughes as manager was a terrible decision. It can be argued that he took Stoke to one of their highest league finishes but what he also did was take them towards relegation too.

His Stoke side was awful last year and that followed from poor spells with Fulham and QPR. So far this season, he’s taken his awful managerial ability to Southampton as they’ve only won one of their 12 league games and Southampton need to make a change and they must do it quickly.
