Upon Steven Gerrard’s arrival at the club, the Rangers board heavily backed the new boss as they brought in a staggering 15 players to give the Liverpool legend a squad capable of challenging Celtic for the title.
At the back, Gerrard completely revamped the defence as he brought in Connor Goldson, Gareth McAuley, Nikola Katic and Joe Worrall.
Although Rangers’ form has at times been overstated domestically, there has been a massive improvement on the side this season and with the squad Gerrard has, The Gers should definitely be looking at a top-two finish.
While Alfredo Morelos has stolen the headlines for his impressive displays going forward and likewise Ryan Kent, at the back, Connor Goldson and even more so, Nikola Katic formed what looked like it could be a solid future defensive partnership early on in the season.
The Croatian defender has played eight games in the league and the 22-year-old defender has put in a lot of impressive performances.
Recently, however, Katic has only played two out of Rangers’ last six games as Gerrard has looked to play Goldson and Worrall in the heart of defence.
Both players, like Katic, have been superb this season and therefore competition for a place in the side is incredibly high. At the moment it looks as though Goldson and Worrall will be the starters for the next few weeks in the league but there’s still a chance Katic can still get back into the team.
Over a long and tough season where Rangers will be competing in Europe, Gerrard needs to have all three defenders fit and ready to play a lot of games.
In a side that is still growing, it’s essential that they keep a tight ship at the back and Katic is still central to that.
He may have lost his place recently but Katic still has a promising future ahead of him, especially at such an early age.
