Despite making one of their best starts to the season, Tottenham Hotspur find themselves on the outside looking in on the title race.
Over the summer, Daniel Levy failed to give Mauricio Pochettino any reinforcements and so far it’s taken its toll on the side. Moreover, with so many players participating at the World Cup, Tottenham needed to bring some fresh legs to help push them towards the top of the table.
One position that has proved to be troublesome for Pochettino this year has been in goal. After winning the World Cup, Hugo Lorris’ form at Tottenham hasn’t been the best. The France captain missed six games with an apparent injury which also occurred during some off-field issues.
In truth, his form has been dropping over the last few seasons and somewhat tellingly, against PSV Eindhoven – a game Spurs had to win – Pochettino decided to play third-choice goalkeeper, Paulo Gazzaniga instead of Michael Vorm.
The Argentinian goalkeeper has seen his stock at the club rise this season due to the poor form of Lloris and with Michael Vorm seemingly coming to the end of his career at the club.
He’s made a start in the Champions League, has played twice in the league while also playing in both of Spurs’ EFL Cup games.
At 26, Gazzaniga is five years younger than Lloris and due to how well he’s performed when called upon, he should be given a chance as the club’s second-choice. He’s been reliable when played and in truth, he has already surpassed Michael Vorm.
It may not have seemed likely when he joined the club but it looks as though Pochettino may have made another key signing.
