Our Manchester United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are discussing the knock-on effects of what a good World Cup could do for some of the United stars.

Many of the regulars anticipate more outgoings as Jose Mourinho looks to trim his squad further ready for more new arrivals in the summer. Especially with the World Cup fast approaching, many of the players will be looking to use the showpiece in Russia to put themselves in the window during the summer.

Many of Red Devils’ stars are always linked with a move away, and after this season’s disappointment in the Champions League and how far adrift they are from their bitter rivals Man City in the Premier League, surely Mourinho will want to revamp the squad as best he can.

Our glass collector feels that two of the players in the squad have will not miss a trick by not impressing in the World Cup in June and potentially earn a big move away, so our landlord is taking a deeper look into them both…

Sergio Romero

Sergio Romero is a class back up ‘keeper for Mourinho to have to hand, however, his appearances seem to depend on whether United are in a cup competition or not, which is not ideal for a 31-year-old international stopper. These limited opportunities have seen him make a handful of starts this season and surely he can do better.

The Argentine custodian is highly capped for his country but a lack of regular game time will surely be hindering him to add to his caps in the future.

Luke Shaw

A lot of ifs and buts around Shaw for the World Cup, however, should he force his way into the United team in the latter end of the season, he has to displace Ashley Young at both club and country levels to gain a foot ahead of the experienced former winger-turned-full-back.

Shaw needs to dig deep if he wants to move on from Old Trafford and targetting the World Cup is not a crazy idea, considering the ability the former Southampton man has in his boots.
