The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern have been reacting to their big central-defender, Virgil van Dijk, who took to Twitter following Liverpool’s 7-6 aggregate victory over Roma in the Champions League semi-final. The Dutch defender had to be at the top of his game and despite losing 4-2 on the night and he won’t be complaining as he prepares to face Real Madrid in Kiev.

The 26-year-old defender joined Liverpool less than six months ago in the January window from Southampton and his impact at the club has been huge already. Arriving as the world’s most expensive defender, van Dijk had to impress, and quickly. The Dutchman took no time in endearing himself to the fans, though, as he put in a man of the match winning performance and scored the winning goal on his debut which just so happened to be an FA Cup 3rd round tie against Everton.
Since his Merseyside derby heroics, van Dijk has gone from strength to strength and has united a defence that was at odds before his arrival. The form of Andy Robertson on van Dijk’s left has helped him greatly, although the calming presence of the Dutchman seems to have worked wonders for both Dejan Lovren and Loris Karius, who looked more than shaky before the 26-year-old’s January arrival.
