Our Manchester United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are glad the inevitable is finally over in the Premier League. With the majority hoping that Jose Mourinho can now concentrate on winning the FA Cup and, start to build a squad ready to challenge for the league a lot closer than they have done this season.

After a great start to the campaign, everybody in and around the pub thought it would be a close two-horse race between the Manchester clubs for the Premier League title. Man City really pushed on while United stumbled and fell considerably behind, even with all the summer investment to hand.

The Red Devils had a fair few opportunities to close the gap but failed to capitalise majority of the time, much to the frustration of our regulars.

Our landlord is one for laying the blame at someone’s feet, and he believes that if these TWO United players had pulled their socks up a little more this year, maybe things would have been a little different.

Here are his two flops that may have cost United the League…

Paul Pogba

The Frenchman started the season looking every bit of the £90m United had spent on him the previous year, however, things soon turned sour and a rocky patch with injuries and suspensions halted his form – something looking back that he has never recovered from.

If Pogba had been in the side for the majority of the season and playing like he did at the start, then maybe the Red Devils may have hung on to their rivals for a little longer.

Next season should see the full package of Pogba, after having two full seasons back in the Premier League and that alone should elevate Jose Mourinho’s team

Luke Shaw

Luke Shaw has had an Old Trafford nightmare since he signed for the club from Southampton under former boss Louis Van Gaal. He’s been in and out fo the side constantly and been hit with numerous injuries which have halted his progress.

Many believed he could be the United left-back for many years to come when he first arrived, after showing promising signs at the Saints. However, under both managers, he has failed to make the big impression needed to kick on in his career.

Surely this summer will see Shaw leave Old Trafford and start afresh elsewhere, which all our regulars agree would be his best move for his career.
