If there’s a happy set of supporters here in the Transfer Tavern than the Chelsea lot right now we certainly haven’t seen them.
After the Blues struggled against the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal earlier this season they have definitely turned things around in light of Antonio Conte’s switch to a 3-4-3.
That formation has provided the team with a great deal more balance and attacking verve whilst the players look so much more happier than they were last season.
Results have reflected all of that on the pitch, too, with the Blues now on an incredible ten-game winning streak in the Premier League that’s taken them six clear at the top of the table.
With January approaching, though, now is not the time to be complacent and our landlord reckons the club need to press home their advantage with some good business in the transfer market.
With that in mind, then, here are two ins and an out the Blues need to complete next month…
In: Geoffrey Kondogbia
Kondogbia is a real powerhouse in midfield and would certainly add some strength through the middle for the Blues.
Whilst N’golo Kante is a shoe-in to start Nemanja Matic has struggled with injuries and Conte is still unsure over Cesc Fabregas despite his recent good performances so there is a space available. The Inter man would fit right in, then, and would make Chelsea even more formidable going into the second half of the season.
Out: John Obi Mikel
As one midfielder comes in, then, another one must go out and it could just be the Nigerian Mikel.
He’s not featured under Conte this season and it’s highly unlikely he’s going to now, too, so Chelsea might as well sell up. He’s been a good servant for the club and has done his defensive duties rather well but, as is the case with all players, eventually they reach their expiry at the top and that has certainly happened now with Mikel.
In: Leonardo Bonucci
To be fair to Chelsea’s back-three it has been pretty solid this season but there’s no doubt in most people’s minds that it could be better.
Eventually, you feel, it is going to get found out and so the Blues should make a contingency plan in signing one of the best defenders around – Leonardo Bonucci. The Juventus man is a leader for both club and country whilst he knows how Conte exactly likes to play so he’d surely slot straight into the Stamford Bridge club’s defence.
