Manchester City supporters are eagerly anticipating their side’s Premier League clash with Southampton this evening after seeing their side record an 18th straight victory by edging past Huddersfield Town 2-1 in their last outing, a result which maintained their healthy advantage at the summit.
Pep Guardiola’s men were tipped by many to go on and win the title this term, and they have certainly made their credentials clear by winning 12 of their opening 13 league matches, although their latest one was arguably their toughest yet. A Nicolas Otamendi own goal gave David Wagner’s Terriers a surprise lead at half time, yet that only seemed to spur the Citizens into action as second half strikes from Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling, the latter somewhat fortunate, sealed a narrow win for the visitors, who in turn moved eight points clear of rivals Manchester United at the top.
Thus, there have been many delighted City supporters in the Tavern this week, many of whom are relishing their team’s home encounter with the Saints this evening, albeit are wary of what Mauricio Pellegrino’s side can do after they breezed past Everton 4-1 on Sunday.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for those Citizens fans lining up at the bar to get their teeth into, not least recent reports which suggest that European champions Real Madrid are eyeing up a January move for striker Aguero.
The Argentina international has been nothing short of a revelation since making the move to the Etihad Stadium back in 2011, as he has since scored a staggering 131 goals in 190 Premier League games, helping the club to two titles.
Yet the 29-year-old could well be on the move in January, as Zinedine Zidane’s Real are reportedly interested in his services, and were Aguero to indeed leave City in the New Year, here are TWO other stars who could follow him out of the Etihad…
Phil Foden
Phil Foden made his Manchester City debut against Feyenoord in the Champions League last week yet, despite how immensely talented the midfielder is, he’s unlikely to get regular football under Guardiola post-January.
The 17-year-old has come up through the ranks at the Etihad Stadium with several impressive displays in both the Under-18 Premier League and Premier League 2, so much so that he deservedly earned a 15-minute cameo in European competition last week.
And although he has occasionally made the bench for the first team this term, Foden isn’t going to command regular football in the second half of the campaign, but with so much talent and potential, it’d be a waste to see it sat on the substitute’s bench.
Thus, the England Under-17 World Cup winner could well seek a loan move in January.
Kevin De Bruyne
Kevin De Bruyne has arguably been the best player in the Premier League so far this season, and will play a crucial part in what success Manchester City go on to have this term and beyond.
The Belgium international has scored four goals and laid on nine assists in 19 appearances for Guardiola’s side this season, helping them to an unbeaten campaign and a stellar winning run of 18 matches.
And his fine form has reportedly attracted the attention of European champions Real Madrid, who could look to the 26-year-old as the answer to their problems, given they are already eight points behind Barcelona in La Liga.
