Our Manchester United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are looking forward to an exciting January transfer window right now.
You can understand why, too, with the fact that their club pulled off some of the most eye-catching moves of all in the previous summer window.
The likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, have all impressed this season, at last, and that certainly bodes well given their obvious talent from their previous clubs.
United, though, are still some way off of winning the league this season and whilst they’ll be looking to strengthen in January they also could be about to let one man go – Anthony Martial.
Whilst Sky Sports are reporting that they do not want to let the Frenchman leave, Sevilla are reportedly interested and so we could still see a move happen.
Our landlord has had a think about this and these are the two pros and two cons of such a deal going through…
Pro 1: He’s under-performed
Martial simply hasn’t been that good this season and if that’s a sign of things to come, United must consider letting him go.
He was great last year in his debut season for the club but there’s now a sense that he’s resting on his laurels slightly when he needs to kick-on and if he doesn’t have the application, he won’t last long at United. Jose Mourinho wants hard workers and if he feels Martial isn’t pulling his weight he’ll soon be shown the door.
Con 1: He’s still young
Perhaps, though, he’s not performing because he is still a very young player and that is easy to forget.
Very few players his age are consistently brilliant week in, week out and so Mourinho should have the patience to stick with him, for now at least, and see what he does over the coming months. United have plenty of promising young players coming through and so Martial is in the right environment to improve.
Pro 2: Financial boost
Given his age and scope to improve United could be in for a serious pay-day should they sell-up.
Martial has shown during his time at Old Trafford that he has the ability to do the audacious and be world class so they’ll know they can charge a pretty handy price for him and his services. With that potential money, then, they could go out and get a proven star and almost certainly boost their top four and title chances for the future.
Con 2: He gives United pace
United’s most glaring weakness is the lack of pace they can have going forward.
At times they’ve played without Martial, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard this season and have looked pedestrian at best. Speed in the Premier League is a vital factor and when Martial is at full tilt very few can stop him. Selling him would only make this facet of United’s make-up weaker and so in that respect, this deal should be a no-go.
