If you want to see some wide Christmas smiles this year look no further than our resident Chelsea fans over by the bar here in the Transfer Tavern.

You can’t blame them for looking so happy either with the way the Blues are playing so far this season.

Antonio Conte’s switch to a 3-4-3 has been nothing short of inspirational and has helped the club embark on an incredible run that sees them top of the tree at Christmas this year.

They’ve left the chasing pack in their wake, too, and so going into the second half of the season their fans are keen to see them press home that advantage with some January signings.

The latest rumour doing the rounds is Niklas Sule being linked with the club (via The Daily Mail,) and so with that in mind our landlord has come up with two reasons why such a deal could be perfect…

He’s young

Chelsea’s current back three is David Luiz, Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta with the former two approaching the twilights of their respective careers.

That means, then, that they are going to start declining before too long and a contingency plan needs to be put in place to avoid any gap in quality between transitions. Signing Sule now limits that factor greatly with him only in his early 20’s and so the Blues should get this one over the line soon.

Chelsea need a new powerhouse at the back

With the current Chelsea back three none of them are what you’d call massively imposing.

Whilst David Luiz and Gary Cahill can obviously handle themselves out on the pitch they aren’t hugely physical whilst Cesar Azpilicueta is always going to be targeted by powerful Premier League strikers. At 6 ft 5 in Sule would have no such worries and could control even the most domineering of centre forwards in the top flight.
