The summer transfer window might have only closed a few weeks ago, but the Chelsea fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are already looking ahead to January.
Chelsea have made a good start to the 2016/17 season – but the Blues fans in the Tavern can see some obvious areas for improvement.
In some areas of the Chelsea first team squad, the Blues’ squad depth is particularly barebones – which could pose an issue as the season progresses.
The Premier League fixture list begins to pick up after the new year, and with the Blues vying for a Premier League title win this season – they will definitely need to reinforce.
The Bundesliga at this point is, without doubt, one of the most competitive leagues in Europe, and whilst Bayern Munich often run away with the title – below them are a number of top clubs that have some great, somewhat unknown, players.
With that said, here are THREE Bundesliga hidden gems Chelsea must look to sign in January……
Niklas Sule
Chelsea’s search for a new defender over the past few months has been well documented, and despite their capture of David Luiz from PSG – John Terry’s imminent departure still leaves the club short at the back.
Despite being just 21, Sule is a key part of Hoffenheim’s first team, and has picked up 69 appearances in a three-year tenure with the club so far.
Proving to be an unstoppable member of the German side’s back four – Sule is quickly turning into the complete defender.

Joel Pohjanpalo
Joel Pohjanpalo has spent the last few years on loan, but he now finds himself back at parent club Bayer Leverkusen.
After making his first team debut this year, Pohjanpolo has made an excellent start to life at the club, scoring an impressive four goals in his first 3 Bundesliga appearances.
At just 22, he is still a developing player – but he is showing all the traits of a top-class centre-forward.
Chelsea are in desperate need of offensive depth following the departures of Remy and Traore; and he fits the bill.
Maximilian Meyer
Some in the Tavern are aware of Maximilian Meyer – but very few people actually know how good he is.
For those uninitiated, Meyer is a German attacking midfielder playing for Schalke.
At just 20, Meyer is still a developing player – but that hasn’t stopped him taking the Bundesliga by storm.
He has made nearly 100 Bundesliga appearances, despite his tender years, and has looked every bit as good as some of the more well-known players in the league.
He has drawn parallels to Lionel Messi for his fast paced dribbling style – and whilst he is certainly a long way off the Barcelona great; our landlord thinks he has every chance of becoming as good eventually.
He would be ace alongside Eden Hazard.
