In the modern game, the art of using two strikers has been lost.

Gone are the days of a classic 4-4-2, with top sides now instead using a breadth of attacking midfielders behind a lone forward.

Nonetheless, much is still made in the Football Transfer Tavern of the historic attacking partnerships of days gone by, with tales often told in the Tavern describing how deadly pairings like Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp were.

It may be a tradition of days gone by, but the punters in the Football Transfer Tavern want to see it come back, and there are a host of top forwards in the Premier League that could benefit from having a top forward next to them.

This is perhaps none more true than with Chelsea and Diego Costa. The Spanish forward has been crying out for an attacking partner in recent weeks, and our landlord thinks a few from Chelsea’s past could have been of real benefit to Costa.

With that said, here are THREE former strikers who Chelsea fans would love to partner Costa…

 Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink

Now manager of QPR, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s Chelsea career is still the stuff of legend amongst the Chelsea faithful in the Football Transfer Tavern.

The Dutch forward was absolutely prolific during his time with the Blues, having scored 70 league goals in 136 appearances.

He is, of course, no stranger to tantalising striking partner play, having built quite the relationship with Eidur Gudjohnson up front for Chelsea.

His raw power and pace would prove unstoppable alongside Diego Costa, and they would no doubt better the record that Hasselbaink had with Gudjohnson.

A terrifying duo.

 Gianfranco Zola

The Italian maestro is a fan favourite amongst the Chelsea faithful in the Football Transfer Tavern, and he would no doubt prove deadly alongside Diego Costa in a modern day Chelsea XI.

Whenever Zola played it was a technical masterclass, and that would contrast brilliantly with Diego Costa’s pure power and brutality.

He would be able to dance between defenders and deliver the ball to Costa, or be on hand to aid the Spaniard en route to goal.

Opposites attract, and this duo would be absolutely brilliant.

Bobby Tambling

One for the older punters in the Football Transfer Tavern now.

Bobby Tambling was, up until a certain Mr. Frank Lampard came along, Chelsea’s highest goalscorer.

The English striker was absolutely prolific, scoring 164 league goals in 302 appearances at a time when football pitches were more reminiscent of a Sunday league pitch!

It would be a delight to see Tambling and Costa pair up simply because their goalscoring tally would be absolutely ridiculous.

They could fire Chelsea to the top off their own back!
