The Chelsea faithful here in the Football Transfer Tavern have had their fair share of disappointing players in recent years…
Roman Abramovich’s millions have brought a host of top quality players to Chelsea over the last few years; some of which have gone on to win the club trophies and become Chelsea legends.
However, for every excellent signing recruited by the Blues’ Russian owner – there are often quite a few huge flops.
Perhaps even more difficult to understand amongst the Chelsea faithful here in the Tavern is the failure of Chelsea youngsters to make it through the system in recent years.
Many have been touted for greatness; but the Blues are still yet to see a single player transition from youth football to first team football since the arrival of a certain Mr John Terry…
With that said, here are THREE over-hyped Chelsea players that never made it…
Josh McEachran
Josh McEachran is easily the most high-profile of Chelsea flops in recent years, with the English midfielder proclaimed by many Chelsea fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern as being the next big thing in English football.
McEachran was a deep lying playmaker in the heart of the Chelsea midfield, and was given a number of opportunities to impress under Carlo Ancelotti.
He looked very impressive when played, and looked set to take the mantle left by Frank Lampard upon his Chelsea departure.
However, a combination of failed loans, injuries and manager sackings contributed to the end of McEachran’s Chelsea tenure.
He now finds himself at Brentford, often struggling to get regular game time despite his drop down to the Championship.
Gael Kakuta
Another Chelsea youngster touted for greatness, Gael Kakuta joined Chelsea in 2007 amidst a cloud of controversy.
The Blues were given a later-dismissed two-year transfer ban as a result of their alleged tapping-up of Kakuta – but this just proved the lengths that Chelsea were willing to go to to ensure Kakuta would become a future Chelsea star.
However, in much the same vein as McEachran – a mixture of failed loans and injuries really halted the progress of the French midfielder.
He never solidified his spot in the Chelesa first team, and now finds himself in the Chinese Super League after failing to find a top-tier club in Europe.
Another player touted for stardom by the Chelsea faithful here in the Tavern – that hasn’t worked out too well.
Sam Hutchinson
Sam Hutchingson’s failure to make it as a Chelsea star was more as a consequence of bad luck rather than anything.
He had everything to make it as a top Premier League defender; but injuries have plagued his entire career.
They even forced him into a temporary retirement in 2010, though he made a comeback a year later.
He has now forged out a career with Sheffield Wednesday, which though a far cry from stardom at Chelsea – is very good considering that he was set for permanent retirement at one point.
He was fully expected to kick on and become a Chelsea star; but it was not to be.
He remains a fan favourite amongst the Chelsea faithful here in the Tavern however.
